WavPRESS is an innovative class of highly scalable image and video compression
algorithms based on wavelet technology for picture compression and communication.
Unlike other conventional image compression methods, WavPRESS offers full bitstream
scalabilities. In other words, different portions of the same compressed bitstream can
produce the best compression performance for different sets of hardware and display
configurations.

Compare with JPEG, WavPRESS can achieve better quality at the same compression ratio,
especially at very high compression ratio;
Progressive lossy-to-lossless transmission, which is especially useful for large image transmission
or in the situations that the bandwidth is limited, such as Internet or image transmission through
