Partial Image Retrieval

Partial Image Retrieval Demonstration

For browsing a database of large pictures, such as medical images, it is impractical for the user to retrieve many large images to view and choose. In this case, the features in scalability allow the users to transfer small size, low quality pictures quickly and identify the pictures of interest. After the pictures have been identified, the full size, high quality versions can then be transferred progressively. Both stages can increase the response speed and decrease the bandwidth requirement

  • Large image access and communication system;

    In this case, the user can choose part of a large image for detail inspection.

    Below are two demonstrations, one on medical image retrieval and another on full color image. At this moment, our demonstrations support only on IE4 and above.

    To view this interactive demonstration, you have to temporary disable some security settings in your Internet Explorer browser as we have yet to apply for a proper commercial digital certificate for the ActiveX plugin.

    To do so, click on < Tools > < Internet Options > on your browser. Click on < Security tab >, and click on the globe image named < Internet > and then scroll the < Security Level for this zone to LOW >. Click < APPLY > and then < OK >. It is fine if you receive prompts that the plugin is insecure, etc., as I can guarantee you that it will be safe; just that we did not pay commercial firms like VeriSign to certify our research program.

    After this, you can go back and select either the cheetah or medical image. You can then select a portion of the large image, and the image server will extract and stream to you only the selected region of interest.

  • Receiver-driven multi-party video-conferencing/mobile videophone communication;

    Similar to the broadcast/multicast environment, the scalability features in WavPRESS can be exploited to improve bandwidth usability.
  • Multimedia and internet-based applications;

    Image and video editing/authoring/archiving applications, corporate intranet video-conferencing/video distribution.Note that to increase efficiency, WavPRESS can be customised and dedicated to particular applications.
